Two states in one purchase, because they are two different scenes. Rolled and strapped, it is equipment — somebody is prepared and moving. Unrolled, it is evidence: somebody stopped here, and the bag is still here, which means they did not pick it back up. The quilted construction is modelled rather than mapped, so the baffles hold their own volume and the stitch lines sink into the fabric instead of sitting on top of it. Synthetic shell material creases differently from canvas — sharper folds that hold their shape — and the shading is tuned for that rather than borrowed from the harder-wearing gear in the catalogue. Soft goods are the hardest thing in this category to make convincing, and most of the detail budget went into the way the fabric gathers at the foot and around the zip.
